Are Wi-Fi Woes Bringing You Down?

Office wireless networks play an important role in today’s workplace, including fostering collaboration, promoting productivity, and allowing visitors to feel connected to the outside world. However, many Wi-Fi networks are far from perfect. In order to reap the benefits of an office Wi-Fi solution, it is important to establish a strong wireless signal that is free of interference and issues. Today, high-performance wireless access is no longer a novelty, but it is a necessary requirement in the modern workplace. Below are three tips for improving Wi-Fi performance throughout your office.

Tip # 1: Check for Interference

Interference from internal and external sources is one of the more common issues when it comes to Wi-Fi troubles. Also, people often overlook physical Wi-Fi barriers, such as filing cabinets, concrete or metal walls, and other dense obstructions that could be blocking signals. Place Wi-Fi access points where their signals are least likely to be blocked by metal barriers. In general, APs should be placed eight to nine feet above the ground.

Tip #2: Good Equipment

Your Wi-Fi network is only as good as the equipment you use. Make sure you are using proper cables, switches, access points, and antennas. Your switches should be able to provide enough power per connected AP, and CAT 6 Ethernet cables should be used for long runs. Also remember to keep your cable runs less 300 feet for Power over Ethernet (PoE) restrictions.

Tip #3: Get An Expert’s Touch

When IT Weapons performs a wireless site survey, we look to determine the true performance capacity and coverage of your existing wireless access system, as well as getting an in-depth look at the sources of your Wi-Fi interference and signal loss. A proper wireless assessment should provide you with a graphical look at your current Wi-Fi capabilities, and also help you plan for improvements in the future.
